This is probably a newbie question but do I need to download and set up a wallet or can I just use my bitcoin receive address from coinbase for mining?

You never want to do this because any online wallet can be hacked. It happens all the time.

There are enough non-custodial wallets available I'm not sure why someone would even want to use an exchange.

damn, i have had my bitaxe connected to coinbase this whole time. Any recommendations of what I should use instead?

@jessie-considine16 are you connected to the coinbase exhange or the coinbase wallet because those are separate things.
