Do I need a wallet or can I use my coinbase account with mining?

I like coldcard for bitcoin, but you shouldn't mine directly into it.

Yes you do need a separate wallet, but you don't want to mine directly into a hardware wallet either because they can't handle the massive number of transactions that mining deposits entail. Get a hot wallet for mining and then transfer to a hardware/cold wallet for safekeeping.
